Scope 1 Emissions: How to inventory, quantify, and report
Identifying sources of emissions are the first step in quantifying emissions. Typical Scope 1 emissions include combustion, flaring, venting, and fugitives. Knowing your sources and understanding how the system functions are crucial for accurate quantification.
The course will conclude with a real facility example, giving students the chance to put their new skills to use by identifying typical emissions sources, quantifying them, and reporting them.

After the course, the learner will have the basic tools needed to develop emissions profiles for their facilities and to quantify their site emissions. Students will be equipped with a strong foundation for what data is needed for reporting and how to develop a greenhouse gas emissions inventory. Students will be led through the following steps:
- Determination of consumption of fuel sources
- Determination of fugitive emissions sources
- Determination of other emissions sources
- Methods for quantifying the emissions sources
- Methods for reporting the emissions
- As a result of this course, learners will be equipped with the following skills:
- Ability to identify which equipment/ processes lead to emissions
- Ability perform a basic calculation of Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions
- Ability to interpret public and company GHG emissions reports
- Ability to support verification activities to confirm emissions quantification
- Handouts will be delivered at the end of the class giving an overview of specific reporting requirements in select reporting jurisdictions in Canada and the United States.
