Safety a key driver at long-time STARS supporter ConocoPhillips Canada

ConocoPhillips Canada has a long-standing principle that “our work is never so urgent or important that we cannot take time to do it safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.”

Given this fundamental principle, it comes as no surprise the company is a presenting sponsor for this year’s PSAC STARS and Spurs Gala, being held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At ConocoPhillips Canada, we’ve been a proud supporter of STARS since 1989,” says James Makowecki, vice-president of Health, Safety and Environment and Sustainable Development for ConocoPhillips Canada. “Having STARS close by not only benefits our staff, it also benefits each man, woman and child living in the communities where we live and operate. Thank you to the first responders for their hard work and dedication in keeping us all safe.”

With safety at the core of its operations, ConocoPhillips Canada aligns with and supports programs such as STARS Air Ambulance, that protect the health and safety of staff as well as those living in the communities near its operations. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, support for organizations like STARS is incredibly important. STARS continues to fly as much as ever, and costs are higher due to safety requirements for pilots, medical staff, and users.

The pandemic and resulting price collapse has forced many tough business decisions onto the industry. But the industry isn’t going away and the importance of investing in shared infrastructure like STARS remains.

Support for STARS is one component of ConocoPhillips Canada’s Health, Safety Environment commitment. A focus on personal and process safety, together with safety leadership, hazard assessment and tracking, and a learning culture has supported their health and safety performance.

“When it comes to our communities, we support organizations – such as STARS - that mirror our values and prioritize the importance of safety,” says Makowecki.

This is the 27th year the Petroleum Services Association of Canada has hosted the STARS and Spurs gala, one of the largest fundraising events benefitting STARS each year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the gala has gone virtual with events running until the end of May 2021. The virtual gala video including entertainment will be released for viewing on Feb. 27 at 6:45pm MST at www.starsandspursgala.ca, the 50/50 lottery will take place in May 2021, and the live industry auction will be at the end of May 2021.
