5 key insights about 2020’s top producers based on PSAC areas

The Daily Oil Bulletin generates several Top Operator reports each quarter that rank producers in Western Canada, including reports based on the number wells drilled or meterage.

Here are five key insight based on data reported for this PSAC ranking, based on the number of wells drilled in the first nine months of 2020:

  • Tourmaline Oil Corp. was the leading operator in two PSAC areas. It was the top operator in AB2 (Foothills Front), with 51 wells drilled. It was also ranked #1 in BC2 (Northern British Columbia), with 72 wells drilled.
  • To the end of September, PSAC area AB6 (Northeastern Alberta) recorded the most wells drilled, at 508. The three leading operators in AB6 during the January-to-September interval were: Suncor Energy Inc. (140 wells drilled), Cenovus Energy Inc. (126 wells) and Canadian Natural Resources Limited (60 wells).
  • While AB6 had the most wells drilled (508), it also recorded the largest year-over-year decline. In the first nine months of 2019, a total of 966 wells were drilled in Northeastern Alberta (a YOY difference of 458 wells).
  • PSAC area AB7 (Northwestern Alberta) reported the only year-over-year increase in wells drilled. Over the first nine months of 2020, a total of 182 wells were drilled compared to 171 in the year-prior period. Birchcliff Energy Ltd. was the top operator in AB7 for both 2020 (28 wells drilled) and 2019 (24 wells drilled).
  • Aside from AB7, the PSAC area that came closest to recording an almost flat year-over-year change was SK1 (Central Saskatchewan). There were 247 wells drilled in SK1 in the first nine months of 2020 versus 259 in the comparable period a year ago, off only 12 wells.
