Less than 30 percent of the drilling fleet in Western Canada was active as last week came to a close.

Making matters worse, activity is down approximately 20 percent compared to the same time last year.

According to JWN's Rig Locator, 153 out of 565 rigs were active on Friday, or 27 percent of the fleet. This compares to 211 out of 404 rigs active on Mar. 15, 2018.

Top operators included Crescent Point Energy (10 rigs), Seven Generations Energy (8 rigs) and Husky Energy (7 rigs).

Active rigs on the Rig Locator are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving. (Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down).
