The CEO of Cenovus Energy is retiring from his board position with Trican Well Service Ltd. effective the end of the year, Trican said on Monday.

Alex Pourbaix has served on the Trican board since May 2012, prior to taking on the Cenovus leadership role in November 2017. He has served as chair of Trican’s human resources and compensation committee, and as a member of its corporate governance committee.

Trican said the move is so that Pourbaix can focus on his role at Cenovus, as well as his other commitments as board chair at Mount Royal University and incoming board chair at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP).

At CAPP, he will take over from current chair Jeffery Tonken, CEO of Birchcliff Energy.

In a statement, Trican CEO Dale Dusterhoft said that “not only is [Pourbaix] a great business leader, but he has played a pivotal role in guiding the company through the tumultuous times faced in the oil and gas industry of late.

“We appreciate his time and efforts with the company particularly in light of his tremendous obligations as the head of Cenovus. Alex is very highly regarded in the community and his leadership on the board will be missed.”

Trican said it does not anticipate appointing a replacement at this time.
