Alberta’s longest-running and largest fundraiser marked its 25th anniversary over the weekend with dinner, raffles, auctions, music and $1.4 million raised for the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS).

That's $200,000 more than the it raised last year.

The Petroleum Services Association of Canada hosted its annual STARS & SPURS Gala at Stampede Park, featuring performances by hoop dancer Dallas Arcand Jr. and award-winning artists George Canyon, Gord Bamford and Aaron Pritchett.

Since inception, the STARS & SPURS gala has now raised over $17 million for the air ambulance, PSAC said in a statement.

“Regardless of the crisis faced by industry that is creating countless financial challenges, oilfield services companies and their customers, the E&P companies, continue to appreciate the service that STARS provides” PSAC CEO Gary Mar said in a statement.

“The appreciation of this critical service was clearly demonstrated by the remarkable amount of funds raised in these extremely difficult times.”

PSAC estimates that more than 1,500 attended the event, including representatives from the energy sector, STARS crew members, volunteers and the Humboldt Bronco families who tragically lost 16 loved-ones in a horrific crash last April in Saskatchewan.

“I am so humbled by and grateful for the community who has supported the PSAC STARS & SPURS Gala over the past 25 years, especially our generous partner, PSAC, and its members. Albertan’s philanthropic spirit continues to amaze me even through times of change and uncertainty,” said STARS CEO Andrea.

“When you see a red helicopter in the sky, know that your support has helped STARS continue to help the critically ill and injured and provide emergency care across the province.
