The Alberta Energy Regulator says its retiring CEO Jim Ellis will be exiting his post sooner than expected.

Taking the role while the regulator searches for a permanent replacement will be Gord Lambert, the former vice-president of sustainable development with Suncor Energy.

Lambert played a key role in the creation of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) and served as chair of the Alberta Climate Technology and Innovation Task Force.

A member of the AER board of directors, he took over as interim president and CEO effective Dec. 1, 2018.

The AER announced the resignation of Jim Ellis in early November. This was originally expected to take effect on Jan. 31, 2019, but the regulator announced on Friday he would be using his accumulated leave time to make his last official day in the office on Nov. 30.
