Ohio-based Babcock & Wilcox says it has been awarded a contract to provide five industrial water-tube boilers for the new in situ oilsands project Imperial Oil is building north of Fort McMurray.

Imperial announced in early November that it is proceeding with the 75,000 bbl/d Aspen project, which has a projected capital cost of $2.6 billion.

B&W said it will design and supply the five boilers, which feature its multi-circulation boiler technology, and modularized auxiliary components to provide steam for the solvent-assisted SAGD facility.

Engineering work for the boilers is underway, with delivery scheduled for Q4/2019 and Q1/2020.

Aspen is expected to commence production in 2022.
