For most of the month of January, top operator Crescent Point Energy Corp. has employed 26 or 27 rigs each day, according to Rig Locator.
The company had 26 rigs at work Thursday afternoon, to lead the pack, while Canadian Natural Resources Limited and Encana Corporation each had 15 active rigs.
Overall, 355 rigs were active across Western Canada (57 per cent of the fleet at work), up from 349 active rigs at the close of last week (56 per cent active).
For the same week a year ago, 346 rigs were active with 305 down (53 per cent active rate).
Active rigs on Rig Locator are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving. (Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down.)
