Canada has ‘run out of room on export pipelines’: This week’s best quotes

Here are some of the most interesting quotes from new coverage in the Daily Oil Bulletin for the week ending Jan. 19, 2018.

Patrick Delaney, vice-president of health and safety at the Petroleum Services Association of Canada, commenting on current safety challenges being faced by oilfield operators:

“Our focus, and the stats show, right across the industry it is the younger workers, age 18 to 24, and workers who have been on the job less than a year, who have the highest injury rates.”

GMP FirstEnergy director of institutional research Martin King, discussing the current uptick in Canadian crude by rail shipping and expectations for growth to continue:

“We were clearly starting to run up against a wall here in terms of getting barrels to market on the pipelines. We've been talking about more railing for probably two years now…and it's finally starting to happen. We've basically run out of room on the export pipelines.”

Matthew Heffernan, CEO of Zedi Inc., following a summit of oilpatch and Silicon Valley leaders organized by Calgary Economic Development that was designed to advance innovation in oil and gas:

“The biggest gap…is, if we are going to look at new technology to help the energy sector and we want to entice ideas from Silicon Valley, we may want to give them an introduction to oil and gas, because right now we have one group of people saying, ‘here is all the cool stuff we do,’ and you have another group of people saying, ‘we have specific problems,’ and there isn’t a direct linkage between the two.

“They don’t speak the same language, so let’s understand each other first, and what problem we are trying to solve, and then we can apply what they have for technology or solutions or ideas against these problems.”

CP Rail chief marketing officer John Brooks, discussing the company’s approach to pursuing new business shipping crude by rail:

“We are doing what we said we were going to do from day one — we are going to be very prudent, we are going to be cautious because we have been burned before in this market…

“We understand crude is only going to be here for a certain period of time. We are looking for strategic partners with long-term objectives that align with ours and allow us to have a more stable-looking business…Those are the types of customers we are talking about — customers who do business not only in crude, but also in other lines.”

Dr. Petra Dolata, associate professor and Canada Research Chair in the History of Energy at the University of Calgary, in her article “Understanding the Shift in Energy Security,” published in partnership with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute:

“In the short term, energy security will continue to mean ensuring energy independence and a secure supply of oil and gas.

“In addition to this traditional understanding of the concept, the U.S. will increasingly define it as ensuring job security. In the long run, however, energy security will include sustainability and efficiency targets as well as address issues of energy justice and energy poverty.”
