​Suncor reports 123 bird fatalities at Fort Hills site

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) says it is responding the death of more than 100 birds at the new Fort Hills oilsands mine.

The AER says that Fort Hills Energy, the company representing the partnership led by Suncor Energy, has reported 123 deceased or euthanized waterfowl and songbirds at the site.

The company is continuing to monitor and collect the injured and deceased birds, the AER said.

The regulator said it is working with Fort Hills Energy, the Government of Alberta, and the Government of Canada to ensure that all safety, wildlife, and environmental requirements are met during the response to the incident.
