Start-up of the Sabine Pass LNG export terminal in early 2016 set the United States on a course for increasing dominance in the global natural gas trade.
There are now four LNG units operational at Sabine Pass, which is located on the US Gulf Coast near the Louisiana-Texas border. A fifth unit is currently under construction and will increase total liquefaction capacity in the US to 3.5 billion cubic feet per day, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Five additional LNG projects are currently under construction in the United States, expected to increase total U.S. liquefaction capacity to 9.6 bcf/d by the end of 2019, the EIA says.
This includes Cove Point in Maryland, Elba Island in Georgia, Freeport in Texas, Corpus Christi in Texas and Cameron LNG in Louisiana.
