There was a slight uptick this week in the number of rigs working across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin.

According to Rig Locator, there were 219 active rigs Thursday afternoon (34 per cent of the fleet was active) compared to 216 at the end of last week (34 per cent active).

During the same week a year ago, operators had 157 rigs at work (24 per cent active rate).

Tourmaline Oil Corp. was the busiest operator on Thursday afternoon with 15 active rigs, followed by Crescent Point Energy Corp. with 13.

Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving.

(Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down).
