There were 354 rigs at work Thursday afternoon across the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, even with the count last week and also a year ago.
Overall, 57 per cent of the drilling fleet is active (265 rigs are down), mirroring last week’s percentage rate with 352 active rigs (269 rigs down).
For the same week a year ago, 355 rigs were active with 284 down (56 per cent active rate).
Crescent Point Energy Corp. has almost twice as many rigs at work as the next most-active operator, with 29 active rigs Thursday afternoon. Encana Corporation had 15 active rigs.
Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving. (Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down.)
