Tourmaline Oil Corp. has taken the lead this week as the busiest operator across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, with 17 rigs at work on Thursday afternoon.
Crescent Point Energy Corp. is running second with 15 active rigs.
There were 223 rigs at work Thursday afternoon in Western Canada (35 per cent of the fleet was active), even with the count at the close of last week, according to Rig Locator.
During the same week in 2016, operators had 130 rigs at work (19 per cent active rate).
Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving.
(Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down).
