There were three fewer active rigs Thursday afternoon across Western Canada compared to the close of last week, although the count is still close to a hundred more than the same week a year ago.

According to Rig Locator, operators had 203 rigs at work on Thursday (32 per cent of the fleet was active), down slightly from 207 rigs at work last week (33 per cent active).

During the same week in 2016, however, operators had 105 rigs at work (16 per cent active rate).

Crescent Point Energy Corp. had 17 active rigs Thursday afternoon, to lead the pack, followed by Tourmaline Oil Corp. with 15.

Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving.

(Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down.)
